  2. New year is always a bit of a headache. My situation isn’t very bad but my dog is also shy to people. Sometimes she just whines a lot when visitors are here.

I have never used a harness so I can’t give proper advice or opinion on it. But from what I see from others, it seems to work pretty well for them. Some are still using it for their dogs.

Thank you Lemon. It was not that bad this year. I wonder if my dog has started getting used to it. If that’s the case, I couldn’t be more happy. Though things are still tough. We will do our best to calm her down.

Hope everything will be good. I know sometimes it’s a bit frustrating but hey don’t worry. We all have been there. Feel free to let us know if there are any further problems. It’s always good to talk to some people and have some discussions.

Maybe a bit too late for this post, but I just want to say that it also worked for me. Though I stopped using it for a long time already. I don’t really feel like I have the need to use it now. But it was pretty helpful in the past.
  7. So far it isn’t a big problem for me. We just do what we normally do. Though the coldest month hasn’t come yet. But indeed regular walking, at least for me, is pretty important. Making sure your dog has warm clothes as what aquadust said might help.
  8. I wonder if she is just shy to people in general or she is feeling threatened by the presence of your cousins. There seems to be a bit of difference. If she is generally shy, probably warming her up or giving her some time to adapt to the presence of your cousins might help.

Thanks for all your suggestions. It seems that she is constantly at this state when the firework season is here. Music doesn’t seem to help much however... I guess it’s somehow related to her past. She was the last puppy being adopted. We knew she is a bit scared of everything ever since we have had her with us. Now we are still trying to spend more time with her.
  10. I suppose the quick way to help the dog is to fight the sound with something calmer and more familiar, like the music you often play when he's around. It's probably better to think about how to desensitize the dog from the noise, so he won't be scared the next time it happens.
  11. I'm also thinking about how to make her feel less intimidated around people. We have been socializing her, taking her out on walks, and trying to let her experience many things, but I suppose it isn't always enough. For now, I say the word "no" then turns on the collar when she gets too persistent. It seems to be working so far.
  12. Good to know. I agree that children are actually harder to deal with. But it seems to me that having adults around them is already a good way to go. Happy new year to you too. My dog can get nervous around this time of the year too. Hope everything will be fine for both you and me!

There seems to be some sort of medical stuff that can help your dog calming down. I saw people doing that. Though I won’t recommend if the situation is not yet extreme.
  14. Yeah indeed. Sometimes you might have to consider punishment. Behaviours are sometimes hard to correct without punishment. Though it seems to me that the major problem is her shyness around people, in which case, I suggest letting your cousins or friends know about the situation beforehand.
  15. It does seem like Aqua is a little scared of new people. Have you tried moving her somewhere familiar but quiet for food time? A correction will be necessary if the behavior gets worse. She has to understand that being aggressive for food means no food at all.
  16. I don't know how you have been training Momo, but even dogs of one breed may have different traits. A specific repeat training period sounds unnecessary, assuming you are using the command routinely. Maybe you need to make hundreds of repetitions for weeks if Momo appears to be a slow learner.
  17. Thanks, Lemon! At least Christmas day was okay! I was happy. I did tell the guests to not bother Milo too much if the dog wouldn't play with them. The children were much harder to remind than the adults (as expected). He could've done better when it came to the place command, but it didn't bring many problems. We will still have people around for New Year though I don't think it will be as crowded as yesterday. I hope this is a good sign. Happy holidays to everyone!

My friend has similar situations. From what I know, basically she just accompany her dog all night long (day time as well when there’s firework during day time and she’s home).
  19. I guess so. Somehow I just feel like I don’t want to punish. Probably this is not a good way to go. I wonder if you guys also have times that you don’t want to punish your dog.
  20. I hope everything will go well with you and milo. Trainings can be tough and difficulties can pop up in every phase, but I guess it’s normal for us and our dogs. Let us know if there are updates. 🙂
  21. That seems to be quite a headache. Have you tried some command trainings before? Also, is Aqua scared of people? According to what you said, it seems like her doesn’t like other people getting close to her?
  22. Hi Marsai! Welcome to the family. We are all learning here so feel free to drop any questions you might want to ask and I’m sure someone will be at the corner to help, or in general, we can just have some discussions. Nice to meet you!
  23. My puppy Aqua seems more possessive of her food bowl lately. She snarls when I come near it after putting it down, and it gets even worse when my cousins come around. (They are not close to Aqua, but still.) Is there any way to quickly correct this behavior?
  24. Momo is around 10 months old now. Thinking back now, we probably can do with more repetitions and stress the markers while toning down our expectations. Do you have minimum numbers for the repetition and training period? Do I have to repeat the process every once in a while (but shorter than the first training)? I expect that we won't have to be this busy once Momo is an adult.

I saw you from the post about closed doors. I wonder if your dog gets frightened easily. Have you talked to your vet before? It seems to be the most possible option so far to figure out what’s the best for your dog.
  26. I agree that it’s actually better to find the cause of such behaviours. Though I won’t rule out the possibility that probably your dog just dislikes closed doors and that’s what it is. Does your dog have any behaviours similar to this that might be also drawing your attention?
